Nathaniel Bliss

Nathaniel Bliss, born on November twenty-eighth, seventeen hundred, was a prominent English mathematician and astronomer of the eighteenth century. His academic journey began at Oxford University, where he honed his skills and knowledge, eventually earning the esteemed position of Savilian Professor of Geometry.

Bliss is perhaps best known for his tenure as Britain's fourth Astronomer Royal from seventeen sixty-two to seventeen sixty-four. During this period, he made significant contributions to the field of astronomy, particularly through his meticulous meridian observations of a comet and a solar eclipse that were visible from Greenwich.

His work was instrumental in addressing the longitude problem, a critical challenge of the time. Following his passing, many of his observations were acquired by the Board of Longitude, underscoring the lasting impact of his research and findings in the realm of navigation and astronomy.
