Navi Pillay

Navi Pillay, born on September twenty-third, nineteen forty-one, in Durban, South Africa, is a distinguished jurist and lawyer known for her groundbreaking contributions to human rights and international law. As a South African of Indian Tamil descent, she made history as the first non-white woman judge of the High Court of South Africa. Pillay's legal career began after she earned her Bachelor of Arts in nineteen sixty-three and her Bachelor of Law in nineteen sixty-five from the University of Natal, where she later became a prominent figure in the legal defense against apartheid.

In nineteen sixty-seven, she established her own law firm, becoming the first woman to do so in Natal. Her pursuit of legal excellence led her to Harvard University, where she participated in the foreign exchange Harvard-South Africa Scholarship Program, earning her Master of Law in nineteen eighty-one and later a Doctorate of Jurisprudence in nineteen eighty-eight. Pillay's commitment to justice was further recognized when she was nominated to the High Court of South Africa in nineteen ninety-five, and she subsequently served as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Pillay's tenure as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from September first, two thousand eight, to September thirtieth, two thousand fourteen, marked a significant chapter in her career. Her term was extended for an additional two years, during which she championed human rights on a global scale. Following her departure, she continued her advocacy as the sixteenth Commissioner of the International Commission Against the Death Penalty and took on various leadership roles, including chairing the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

Currently, Pillay serves as an ad hoc judge of the International Court of Justice in the case of The Gambia v Myanmar, while also presiding over the International Commission Against the Death Penalty in Madrid and the Advisory Council of the International Nuremberg Principles Academy.
