Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, born on December 26, 1978, is an Iranian-British dual citizen known for her work as a public relations executive, project manager, and journalist. Her life took a dramatic turn when she was detained in Iran on April 3, 2016, amid a complex diplomatic dispute between Britain and Iran. In September 2016, she was sentenced to five years in prison, accused of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government, a charge she has consistently denied.

During her imprisonment, Zaghari-Ratcliffe faced significant health challenges and undertook at least three hunger strikes to advocate for necessary medical treatment. In March 2020, she was temporarily released due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although she remained under electronic monitoring. The Iranian authorities later claimed that her detention was linked to her involvement in a BBC Persian online journalism course, which they alleged was aimed at spreading propaganda against Iran.

Her husband has maintained that her imprisonment was a tactic to leverage a historical debt owed by the UK to Iran, stemming from a failed arms deal in 1979. After her original sentence ended on March 7, 2021, she faced additional charges, resulting in a further year of imprisonment for alleged propaganda activities against the government. Despite appealing her conviction, her appeal was rejected in October 2021.

Finally, on March 16, 2022, Zaghari-Ratcliffe was released from prison, coinciding with the repayment of an outstanding debt of three hundred ninety-three million eight hundred thousand pounds by Britain to Iran. She returned to the United Kingdom the following day, marking the end of a harrowing chapter in her life.
