Neferefre

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Neferefre

Neferefre, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the Fifth Dynasty, was born around -2480-00-0. He is believed to be the eldest son of Pharaoh Neferirkare Kakai and Queen Khentkaus II, known as Prince Ranefer prior to his ascension to the throne.

During his brief reign, Neferefre initiated the construction of a pyramid in the royal necropolis of Abusir, named Netjeribau Raneferef, which translates to 'The bas of Neferefre are divine.' Unfortunately, the pyramid remained unfinished, with evidence suggesting that work ceased during or shortly after his second year of rule. This, along with the lack of records from his reign, indicates that he likely passed away unexpectedly after only two to three years as pharaoh.

Despite the brevity of his reign, Neferefre was interred in his pyramid, which was hastily completed in the form of a mastaba by his younger brother and successor, Pharaoh Nyuserre Ini. Fragments of his mummy were discovered, revealing that he died in his early twenties.

Little is documented about Neferefre's activities beyond the foundation of his pyramid and his efforts to complete that of his father. A solitary text suggests he may have begun plans for a sun temple named Hotep-Re, meaning 'Ra is content,' although it is uncertain if this temple ever became functional due to the short duration of his reign. Following his death, Neferefre may have been succeeded by the little-known Pharaoh Shepseskare, whose connection to Neferefre remains a topic of debate among Egyptologists.
