Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Nelson Vails

Nelson Vails, born on October thirteenth, nineteen sixty, is a distinguished retired road and track cyclist from the United States. His professional cycling career spanned from nineteen eighty-eight to nineteen ninety-five, during which he made history at the nineteen eighty-four Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, California. Vails became the first African American and the first person of African descent to win an Olympic medal in cycling, securing a silver medal in the sprint event, finishing just behind his fellow countryman Mark Gorski.

Beyond his Olympic success, Vails is also recognized for his role in popular culture. He portrayed a bicycle messenger in the film Quicksilver, a role that resonated with his real-life experience as a New York bicycle messenger. His speed and agility earned him the nickname 'The Cheetah,' a fitting tribute to his prowess on two wheels.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Vails was inducted into the US Bicycle Hall of Fame in two thousand nine. His legacy continued to grow as he was also honored with an induction into the Lehigh Valley Velodrome Cycling Hall of Fame in two thousand five. After retiring from competitive cycling, he transitioned into a role as a cycling commentator for major television networks and actively participated in cycling safety programs, advocating for the sport he loves.
