Nennius

Nennius, a notable Welsh monk of the ninth century, is best known for his contributions as a historian and writer. He is traditionally credited with the authorship of the 'Historia Brittonum,' a significant historical text that provides insight into early British history. This attribution is largely based on the prologue that accompanies the work, which has been a focal point for scholars studying his life and contributions.

As a student of Elvodugus, who is often identified with Bishop Elfodd of Bangor, Nennius was part of a scholarly tradition that sought to unify British ecclesiastics under a common calendar, particularly in the acceptance of the Continental dating for Easter. His mentor, Elvodugus, passed away in eight hundred and nine, marking a pivotal moment in Nennius's educational journey.

Residing in the region that encompasses present-day Brecknockshire and Radnorshire in Powys, Wales, Nennius lived in a rural society, somewhat isolated from the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. This geographical seclusion may have influenced his writings and the preservation of Welsh traditions, which often intertwine his narrative with that of other historical figures, including those who escaped the massacre of Welsh monks by Ethelfrid in six hundred and thirteen.
