Nerses IV the Gracious

Nerses IV the Gracious, born on June fourth, one thousand one hundred two, served as the Catholicos of Armenia from the year one thousand one hundred sixty-six until one thousand one hundred seventy-three. His tenure was marked by a profound commitment to fostering unity within the Christian community, particularly through efforts to reconcile the Armenian Church with the Eastern Orthodox Church.

During his time as a bishop and later as Catholicos, Nerses convened a significant council that included emissaries appointed by the Byzantine emperor. This initiative aimed to explore potential avenues for reunification between the two churches. However, the terms proposed by the emperor were deemed unacceptable by both Nerses and the Armenian Church, leading to the unfortunate collapse of these negotiations.

Beyond his ecclesiastical duties, Nerses IV is celebrated as a theologian, poet, writer, and hymn composer. His literary contributions have earned him the title of 'the Fénelon of Armenia,' reflecting his dedication to drawing the Armenian Church out of isolation. His legacy is honored by both the Catholic Church, which commemorates his feast on August thirteenth, and the Armenian Apostolic Church, which celebrates him in mid-October during the Saturday of the Fourth Week of the Holy Cross.
