Nguyễn Hữu Thọ

Nguyễn Hữu Thọ, born on July tenth, nineteen ten, was a prominent South Vietnamese politician and lawyer who played a pivotal role in the tumultuous history of Vietnam during the mid-twentieth century. His political journey began in nineteen forty-nine, leading protests against French colonial rule and the presence of US naval forces in southern Vietnam. His activism led to his arrest and imprisonment from nineteen fifty to nineteen fifty-two, during which he undertook a hunger strike that significantly bolstered his reputation as a dedicated revolutionary.

Following the partition of Vietnam in nineteen fifty-four, Nguyễn Hữu Thọ chose to remain in the south, initially collaborating with President Ngô Đình Diệm's government. However, his aspirations for reunification through the elections proposed in the accords of nineteen fifty-six led to his second arrest. In nineteen sixty-one, he escaped from prison and became the first interim president and later the chairman of the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam, also known as the Viet Cong, which he co-founded on December twentieth, nineteen sixty.

As the Vietnam War escalated, Nguyễn Hữu Thọ's influence grew. In June nineteen sixty-nine, he was appointed Chairman of the Consultative Council of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam, which was established by North Vietnam. Following the fall of Saigon in April nineteen seventy-five, he became the Prime Minister of the newly formed Republic of South Vietnam. After the official reunification of Vietnam on July second, nineteen seventy-six, he served as one of the vice-presidents under President Tôn Đức Thắng and was also the first mayor of Ho Chi Minh City.

After Tôn Đức Thắng's passing in March nineteen eighty, Nguyễn Hữu Thọ briefly assumed the role of acting President until he was succeeded by Trường Chinh in July nineteen eighty-one. He continued to serve as Deputy Chairman of the Council of State until nineteen ninety-two and held the position of Chairman of the National Assembly from nineteen eighty-one to nineteen eighty-seven. His later years included leadership of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front from nineteen eighty-eight to nineteen ninety-four, solidifying his legacy as a key figure in Vietnam's political landscape.
