Nia DaCosta

Nia DaCosta, born on November eighth, nineteen eighty-nine, is an accomplished American filmmaker known for her innovative storytelling and directorial prowess. She gained significant recognition with her feature-length debut, the crime thriller film Little Woods, released in two thousand eighteen. This remarkable work earned her the prestigious Nora Ephron Prize for Female Filmmakers at the Tribeca Film Festival, marking her as a rising star in the film industry.

Following her debut, DaCosta expanded her repertoire by directing two episodes of the acclaimed British thriller series Top Boy in two thousand nineteen. Her career took a historic turn when she became the first Black female director to debut at number one at the U.S. box office with the horror film Candyman in two thousand twenty-one. This achievement not only highlighted her talent but also broke barriers in an industry that has long been dominated by male directors.

In two thousand twenty-three, DaCosta made history again by becoming the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Comics film with The Marvels. Although the film faced challenges at the box office, it still emerged as the highest-grossing film directed by a Black woman, solidifying her place in cinematic history and inspiring future generations of filmmakers.
