Nicholas Goldschmidt, born on December sixth, nineteen oh eight, was a distinguished Canadian conductor, pianist, music educator, and singer. He was notably the grand-nephew of the renowned composer Adalbert von Goldschmidt, whose legacy in music influenced Nicholas's own artistic journey.

In nineteen thirty-seven, Goldschmidt made the significant decision to immigrate to the United States. His career flourished as he took on the role of director of opera at the San Francisco Conservatory and Stanford University from nineteen thirty-eight to nineteen forty-two. Following this, he directed the opera department at Columbia University from nineteen forty-two to nineteen forty-four, further establishing his reputation in the world of music.

After relocating to Toronto, Goldschmidt became the first music director of the Royal Conservatory Opera School at the University of Toronto from nineteen forty-six to nineteen fifty-seven. His contributions to the arts continued as he co-founded the Royal Conservatory Opera Company in nineteen fifty, which later evolved into the Canadian Opera Company. Additionally, he served as the inaugural music director of the CBC Opera Company from nineteen forty-nine to nineteen fifty-seven.

Goldschmidt's dedication to the arts was recognized with numerous accolades, including being named an Officer of the Order of Canada in nineteen seventy-eight and later promoted to Companion in nineteen eighty-nine. In nineteen ninety-seven, he received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, the highest honor in Canada's performing arts.
