Nicholas Hilliard

Nicholas Hilliard, born in the year fifteen forty-seven, was a distinguished English painter and goldsmith whose artistry flourished during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. Renowned for his exquisite portrait miniatures, Hilliard's work captured the essence of the English court, showcasing the elegance and sophistication of his subjects.

Primarily known for his small oval miniatures, Hilliard also ventured into larger cabinet pieces, reaching heights of up to ten inches. Among his notable creations are at least two half-length panel portraits of Queen Elizabeth, which stand as testaments to his skill and artistic vision. His ability to convey character and emotion in such diminutive formats set him apart from his contemporaries.

Despite enjoying a successful career that spanned forty-five years, Hilliard faced ongoing financial difficulties.
