Nick Holden, born on May 15, 1987, is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who made a significant impact as a defenceman over twelve seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). His career spanned multiple teams, including the Columbus Blue Jackets, Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Vegas Golden Knights, and Ottawa Senators.
Holden's journey in hockey began in St. Albert, Alberta, where he played alongside Ryan Stanton for the St. Albert Raiders. Despite his talent, he initially did not envision a future in the sport and began pursuing a career as a plumber by the age of eighteen. However, his passion for hockey led him to join the Chilliwack Bruins of the Western Hockey League (WHL) as an undrafted player, where he played for two seasons.
After his time in junior hockey, Holden signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he spent seven years developing his skills. His tenure with the Blue Jackets paved the way for a successful stint with the Colorado Avalanche, where he became a key player during the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs. Following three seasons with the Avalanche, he was traded to the New York Rangers, and later to the Boston Bruins, before ultimately signing with the Vegas Golden Knights.
In July 2021, Holden was traded to the Ottawa Senators, marking the final chapter of his playing career. He announced his retirement in 2023 and transitioned to a role within the Golden Knights' player development staff, continuing to contribute to the sport he loves.
