Nicolae Paulescu

Nicolae Paulescu, born on October thirtieth, eighteen sixty-nine, was a prominent Romanian physician and university teacher whose contributions to the field of medicine are particularly noted for his groundbreaking work on diabetes. He is best known for patenting pancreine, a pancreatic extract that contains insulin, which he developed through a meticulous process involving the extraction of bovine pancreas in salted water, followed by purification with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide.

In addition to his medical achievements, Paulescu was an influential figure in Romanian politics. He co-founded the National Christian Union alongside A. C. Cuza, and later played a significant role in establishing the National-Christian Defense League, a political party known for its ultranationalist and anti-Semitic ideologies. His political career was marked by a commitment to these controversial beliefs, which aligned with the early fascist movements in Romania.

Paulescu's legacy is complex, as he was also a leading member of the Iron Guard, a militant religious fascist organization.
