Nicolaes Maes

Nicolaes Maes, born in January sixteen thirty-four, was a distinguished Dutch painter celebrated for his captivating genre scenes, portraits, and religious compositions, alongside the occasional still life. His artistic journey began as a pupil of the renowned Rembrandt in Amsterdam, where he honed his skills and developed a unique style.

After his formative years, Maes returned to his native Dordrecht, where he dedicated two decades to his craft. This period allowed him to cultivate his artistic voice and contribute significantly to the genre painting movement in the Netherlands, establishing a reputation that would follow him throughout his career.

In the latter part of his life, Maes made his way back to Amsterdam, where he ascended to prominence as the leading portrait painter of his time. His work during the final three decades of the seventeenth century solidified his status as the most prominent portrait artist in the city, leaving an indelible mark on the art world.
