Nicolaus Michael Oppel, born on December seventh, eighteen eighty-two, was a prominent German naturalist, zoologist, and herpetologist. His academic journey led him to work closely with the esteemed André Marie Constant Duméril at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle in Paris, where he dedicated his efforts to cataloging and classifying various species of reptiles.
In the year eighteen eleven, Oppel made a significant contribution to the field of herpetology with the publication of his influential work, Die Ordnungen, Familien und Gattungen der Reptilien als Prodrom einer Naturgeschichte derselben, which translates to The Orders, Families, and Types of Reptiles.... This groundbreaking book established the order Squamata and introduced several families, including Cheloniidae and Colubridae, along with the subfamily Crotalinae. Many of the genera he defined continue to be utilized by taxonomists to this day.
In collaboration with Friedrich Tiedemann and Joseph Liboschitz, Oppel co-authored Naturgeschichte der Amphibien, further enriching the understanding of amphibian biology. His work not only advanced the classification of reptiles and amphibians but also laid the groundwork for future research in these fields.
