Nicușor Dan

Nicușor Dan, born on December twentieth, nineteen sixty-nine, in Făgăraș, Brașov County, is a distinguished Romanian mathematician and politician. He has made significant contributions to both fields, earning international recognition as a young mathematician by securing gold medals and perfect scores at the International Mathematical Olympiads in nineteen eighty-seven and nineteen eighty-eight. His academic journey began at the University of Bucharest, followed by advanced studies in France, where he obtained a master's degree from École normale supérieure and a PhD from Paris 13 University.

Upon returning to Romania, Dan established the Școala Normală Superioară București, an institution dedicated to nurturing the brightest Romanian students in scientific research. His commitment to civic activism led him to found the Save Bucharest Union (USB) in two thousand fifteen, focusing on anti-corruption and heritage preservation. The following year, he co-founded the Save Romania Union (USR), although he later resigned in two thousand seventeen due to the party's shift towards a more progressive agenda, favoring a centrist approach instead.

Dan's political career includes serving as a member of the Chamber of Deputies from two thousand sixteen to two thousand twenty and as the mayor of Bucharest from two thousand twenty to two thousand twenty-five. He was re-elected in two thousand twenty-four, during which he prioritized public infrastructure and transparency, despite facing criticism for construction delays. In two thousand twenty-five, he ran as an independent candidate in the Romanian presidential election, securing twenty-one percent of the vote in the first round and ultimately defeating George Simion in the runoff with fifty-three point six percent.

As the seventh president of Romania since two thousand twenty-five, Dan's pro-Western platform stands in stark contrast to the nationalist and Eurosceptic views of his opponents.
