After his tenure in the NHL, Dawes transitioned to European hockey, where he became renowned as a prolific goalscorer in the Kontinental Hockey League. His time with Barys Astana, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, and Ak Bars Kazan was marked by impressive statistics, amassing two hundred sixty-seven goals and five hundred five points in five hundred forty-three games. This remarkable performance places him fifth all-time in KHL point scoring and second in goals.

Dawes began his junior career with the Kootenay Ice in the Western Hockey League, contributing to the team's victory in the two thousand two Memorial Cup.
