Nikita Panin

Nikita Panin, born on September eighteenth, seventeen eighteen, was a prominent Russian diplomat and politician who played a crucial role in shaping the early years of Catherine the Great's reign. Serving as her political mentor for the first eighteen years from seventeen sixty-two to seventeen eighty, Panin was a key advocate for the Northern Alliance and sought to strengthen ties with Frederick the Great of Prussia. His vision included the establishment of an advisory privy council, which aimed to enhance governance in Russia.

During the reign of Empress Elizabeth, Panin held significant diplomatic positions, including ambassador extraordinary to Denmark–Norway from seventeen forty-seven to seventeen forty-eight, and later to Sweden from seventeen forty-eight until June seventeen sixty. His diplomatic acumen was recognized as he continued to serve in various capacities, including as the first present of the Collegium of Foreign Affairs from seventeen sixty-five until seventeen eighty-one.

Despite his influence, Panin's strong opposition to the Partitions of Poland ultimately led to his replacement by the more compliant Prince Alexander Bezborodko. Nevertheless, his legacy endured as Catherine appointed numerous individuals to the Senate who were connected to his powerful family, ensuring that his political ideals continued to resonate within the Russian government.
