Nikolai Pankin

Nikolai Pankin, born on January second, nineteen forty-nine, is a distinguished former Russian swimmer and swimming coach, renowned for his prowess in breaststroke events. His competitive journey spanned three Olympic Games, where he showcased his talent in the one hundred meter and two hundred meter breaststroke, as well as the four by one hundred meter medley relay. At the 1968 Olympics, Pankin earned a bronze medal in the one hundred meter event and narrowly missed another podium finish in the two hundred meter race. He also contributed to the Soviet medley relay team, which secured a bronze medal during the same Games.

Throughout his career, Pankin demonstrated remarkable consistency and skill, particularly at the European Championships in 1970 and 1974, where he claimed medals in all three events he entered. His international accolades continued with a bronze medal in the two hundred meter breaststroke at the 1975 World Championships, marking his last major achievement on the global stage. Pankin's legacy includes setting four world records, two in the one hundred meter breaststroke with times of one minute six point two seconds in 1968 and one minute five point eight seconds in 1969, and two in the two hundred meter breaststroke with times of two minutes twenty-six point five seconds and two minutes twenty-five point four seconds, both achieved in 1969.

Domestically, Pankin's dominance was evident as he secured thirteen national titles across various events, including the one hundred meter and two hundred meter breaststroke, as well as the medley relay. His victories spanned from nineteen sixty-five to nineteen seventy-five, showcasing his sustained excellence in the sport. After retiring from competitive swimming following the 1976 Olympics, Pankin transitioned into coaching, dedicating himself to nurturing the next generation of swimmers in Moscow. Among his notable trainees is Dmitry Volkov, who benefited from Pankin's extensive experience and knowledge.
