Nilakantha Somayaji, born on June fourteenth, fourteen forty-four, was a prominent figure in the Kerala school of astronomy and mathematics. His contributions as a mathematician, astronomer, and astrologer have left a lasting impact on the field. Known also as Keļallur Comatiri, he dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the advancement of scientific thought in his era.
Among his most significant works is the Tantrasamgraha, a comprehensive astronomical treatise completed in fifteen hundred and one. This work not only showcases his mastery of astronomy but also reflects the rich intellectual tradition of the Kerala school. In addition to this, he authored an elaborate commentary on the Aryabhatiya, known as the Aryabhatiya Bhasya, where he explored infinite series expansions of trigonometric functions and tackled complex problems in algebra and spherical geometry.
Nilakantha's contributions extended beyond theoretical mathematics; he also wrote the Grahapariksakrama, a manual that provided guidance on making astronomical observations using the instruments available during his time. His works are a testament to the advanced understanding of mathematics and astronomy in India during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
