Nile Gregory Rodgers Jr., born on September 19, 1952, is a celebrated American musician, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. As the co-founder of the iconic band Chic, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the music landscape, contributing to the sale of over seven hundred fifty million albums and one hundred million singles globally.
Chic, initially formed as the Big Apple Band in 1972 alongside bassist Bernard Edwards, burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut album in 1977. This album featured hit singles such as 'Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)' and 'Everybody Dance'. Their follow-up album, C'est Chic, released in 1978, included the chart-topping tracks 'I Want Your Love' and 'Le Freak', the latter of which sold more than seven million copies worldwide. The 1979 album Risqué produced the legendary 'Good Times', a number one single that became one of the most-sampled songs in hip-hop history.
Beyond his work with Chic, Rodgers has collaborated with a plethora of artists, writing and producing hits like 'He's the Greatest Dancer' and 'We Are Family' for Sister Sledge, as well as 'I'm Coming Out' and 'Upside Down' for Diana Ross. Following Chic's breakup in 1983, he continued to make waves in the industry, producing notable albums for David Bowie, INXS, Duran Duran, and Madonna, among others. His collaborations extend to contemporary artists such as Kylie Minogue, Daft Punk, and Beyoncé, showcasing his enduring influence across generations.
Rodgers' contributions to music have not gone unrecognized; he is a proud inductee of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was honored in 2017 with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for Musical Excellence. With six Grammy Awards to his name, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, his innovative guitar style has earned him accolades, including a spot as the seventh greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone in 2023.
In addition to his musical achievements, Rodgers co-founded Hipgnosis Songs Fund in 2018, a company dedicated to music intellectual property investment. His career continues to inspire, as he remains a true innovator in the music industry.
