His legacy is further enriched by his famous niece, actress Rosamaria Murtinho, who became a Botafogo supporter due to Nilo's influence at the club.

His football journey began in the youth team of Fluminense, where he showcased his talent by winning the Youth Rio de Janeiro Championship in nineteen sixteen. Following a family relocation due to his father's job as a harbourmaster in Natal, Nilo made his adult football debut with América-RN in nineteen seventeen, notably scoring the goal that clinched the club's first title in the Rio Grande do Norte State Championship.

After returning to Rio de Janeiro, Nilo continued to excel, becoming a carioca champion with both Fluminense and Botafogo. His impressive career included six Rio de Janeiro State Tournament victories, with four consecutive wins from nineteen twenty-four to nineteen thirty-five. He also earned the title of top goalscorer three times, in nineteen twenty-four, nineteen twenty-seven, and nineteen thirty-three.

On the international stage, Nilo represented Brazil in the inaugural FIFA World Cup in nineteen thirty, participating in a match against Yugoslavia. He passed away at the age of seventy-one, leaving behind a rich legacy in Brazilian football.
