Nilus of Sora

Nilus of Sora, born in the year one thousand four hundred thirty-three, was a prominent Russian Orthodox monk and philosopher whose influence extended far beyond his lifetime. He is celebrated for his role as a spiritual writer and theologian, contributing significantly to the religious landscape of his time.

As the founder of the Sora Hermitage, Nilus established a community that became a beacon of spiritual life. His teachings and writings laid the groundwork for a movement within the Russian Orthodox Church known as the non-possessors, or nestyazhateli. This group notably opposed the ecclesiastic landownership that was prevalent, advocating for a more ascetic and communal approach to spirituality.

Nilus's legacy is honored within the Russian Orthodox Church, which venerates him as a saint. His feast day is commemorated annually on the seventh of May, marking the anniversary of his repose. Through his life and work, Nilus of Sora remains a significant figure in the history of Russian spirituality.
