Ermias Joseph Asghedom, known to the world as Nipsey Hussle, was born on August 15, 1985, in Los Angeles. He emerged from the vibrant West Coast hip-hop scene in the mid-2000s, gaining recognition for his unique sound and entrepreneurial spirit. His journey began with the self-release of his debut mixtape, Slauson Boy Volume 1, which garnered moderate local success and paved the way for his signing with Cinematic Music Group and Epic Records.
Nipsey's rise to fame was marked by his acclaimed mixtape series, Bullets Ain't Got No Name, and notable projects such as The Marathon, The Marathon Continues, and Crenshaw. The latter made headlines when American rapper Jay-Z purchased one hundred copies for one hundred dollars each, showcasing Hussle's impact on the industry. His debut studio album, Victory Lap, released in 2018, peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and received critical acclaim, earning a nomination for Best Rap Album at the sixty-first Grammy Awards.
In addition to his musical achievements, Hussle was a passionate activist and entrepreneur. He founded the Marathon Clothing store in 2017, alongside partners including his brother Samiel Asghedom and notable figures in the industry. He also launched a co-working space called Vector 90, aimed at empowering the community. Tragically, on March 31, 2019, Nipsey was fatally shot outside his store in South Central Los Angeles, a loss that resonated deeply within the music community and beyond.
The man responsible for his death, Eric Holder, was arrested shortly after the incident and later found guilty of first-degree murder in July 2022. On February 22, 2023, Holder was sentenced to sixty years to life in prison, marking a somber chapter in the legacy of a man who inspired many through his music and community efforts.
