Nirmala Sitharaman

Nirmala Sitharaman, born on August eighteenth, nineteen fifty-nine, in Madurai, hails from a Tamil family and has made significant strides in Indian politics. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in nineteen eighty, followed by a Master of Arts in Economics and a Master of Philosophy from Jawaharlal Nehru University in nineteen eighty-four. After a brief stint in the United Kingdom, she returned to India and began her public service career.

In two thousand three, Sitharaman was appointed to the National Commission for Women, serving until two thousand five. She joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in two thousand eight and became a national spokesperson for the party from two thousand ten to two thousand fourteen. Her political journey took a significant turn in May two thousand fourteen when she was appointed as the minister of state with independent charge of the ministry of commerce and industry in the First Modi ministry, a role she held until September two thousand seventeen.

On September third, two thousand seventeen, she made history by becoming the twenty-eighth defence minister of India. Subsequently, on May thirtieth, two thousand nineteen, she was appointed as the minister of finance and corporate affairs in the Second Modi ministry. After a successful five-year term, she was reappointed in June two thousand twenty-four following the National Democratic Alliance's victory in the general elections.

Sitharaman is notable for being the first woman to serve as both the minister of defence and the minister of finance full-time. In July two thousand twenty-five, she achieved the milestone of being the longest continuously serving Indian finance minister, surpassing C. D. Deshmukh. Furthermore, in February two thousand twenty-six, she became the first Indian finance minister to present the union budget for nine consecutive times, solidifying her legacy in Indian politics.
