Norm Maciver, born on September first, nineteen sixty-four, is a distinguished Canadian ice hockey executive and former player. Currently serving as the associate general manager for the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League (NHL), Maciver has made significant contributions to the sport both on and off the ice.
Maciver's hockey journey began at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he played college hockey starting in nineteen eighty-two. His exceptional skills earned him All-American honors twice, in nineteen eighty-five and nineteen eighty-six. Despite going undrafted by NHL teams, he signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers in nineteen eighty-six, marking the beginning of a notable professional career.
Throughout his thirteen-year tenure in the NHL, Maciver showcased his talent as a defenseman with several teams, including the Hartford Whalers and the Edmonton Oilers. While playing for the Oilers' American Hockey League affiliate, the Cape Breton Oilers, he was honored with the Eddie Shore Award, recognizing him as the league's best defenseman. In nineteen ninety-two, he was selected by the expansion Ottawa Senators in the waiver draft, where he led the team in scoring during their inaugural season.
Maciver's career continued with stints at the Pittsburgh Penguins and Winnipeg Jets, culminating in his participation in the Jets' final season before their relocation to become the Phoenix Coyotes. After facing a series of injuries, he retired from professional play in nineteen ninety-nine, having played for six NHL teams. Following his retirement, Maciver transitioned into coaching, initially serving as an assistant in the AHL before joining the Boston Bruins in the NHL.
