Norma Leah Nelson McCorvey, born on September 22, 1947, is best known as the plaintiff in the historic 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade. This landmark decision declared that state laws prohibiting abortion were unconstitutional, fundamentally altering the landscape of reproductive rights in the United States.
Throughout her life, McCorvey's beliefs underwent significant transformations. In her later years, she embraced Evangelical Protestantism and subsequently converted to Catholicism, becoming an active participant in the anti-abortion movement. Reflecting on her past, she described her involvement in Roe as 'the biggest mistake of [her] life.'
However, in a revealing moment captured in the documentary AKA Jane Roe, McCorvey shared what she termed her 'deathbed confession.' She disclosed that she had never truly supported the anti-abortion movement and admitted to being compensated for her public stance against abortion.
