Norman Mailer

Nachem Malech Mailer, known as Norman Kingsley Mailer, was born on January 31, 1923, and left an indelible mark on American literature and journalism until his passing on November 10, 2007. Over a career that spanned more than six decades, Mailer authored eleven best-selling books, achieving acclaim in each of the seven decades following World War II. His debut novel, The Naked and the Dead, published in 1948, established him as a significant literary voice.

Mailer was a pioneer of 'creative nonfiction' or 'New Journalism,' a genre that blends the narrative techniques of fiction with factual reporting. He was part of a notable group of writers, including Gay Talese and Truman Capote, who transformed the landscape of journalism. His nonfiction novel, The Armies of the Night, released in 1968, garnered both the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction and the National Book Award, further solidifying his reputation.

Throughout his career, Mailer was not only a writer but also a cultural commentator, known for his provocative views expressed through novels, essays, and public appearances. His most famous essay, 'The White Negro,' remains widely discussed and reprinted. In 1955, he co-founded The Village Voice, a publication that became a cornerstone of arts and politics in Greenwich Village.

Despite his literary achievements, Mailer's life was marked by controversy, including a conviction for assault in 1960 after a violent incident with his wife, Adele Morales. He also made an unsuccessful bid for the mayoralty of New York City in 1969, finishing fourth in the Democratic primaries. Mailer was married six times and fathered nine children, reflecting a complex personal life that paralleled his multifaceted career.
