Norman Whiteside

Norman Whiteside, born on May 7, 1965, is a distinguished former professional footballer from Northern Ireland, celebrated for his versatility as both a midfielder and forward. He embarked on his football journey with Manchester United, where he signed professional forms in 1982 at the tender age of seventeen. His impact was immediate, as he quickly established himself as a vital component of the team.

During his seven-year tenure at Manchester United, Whiteside made a remarkable contribution, netting sixty-eight goals across two hundred seventy-eight league and cup appearances. His accolades include two FA Cup winner's medals, earned in 1983 and 1985, and he showcased his talent in several high-stakes matches, including the FA Youth Cup final in 1982 and the League Cup final in 1983.

In July 1989, Whiteside transferred to Everton for a fee of six hundred thousand pounds. Unfortunately, his playing career was cut short just two years later at the age of twenty-six due to a debilitating knee injury. Despite this early retirement, he left an indelible mark on the sport, holding records as the youngest player to participate in a FIFA World Cup and the youngest to score in both a League Cup and FA Cup final.

Whiteside earned thirty-eight caps for the Northern Ireland national team, representing his country in the 1982 and 1986 World Cups. He played a pivotal role in securing the last British Home Championship title in the 1983–84 season. After hanging up his boots, he transitioned into a career as a podiatrist and continues to contribute to the football community through his work in the corporate hospitality department at Old Trafford.
