Norodom Suramarit, born on March sixth, nineteen ninety-six in Phnom Penh, was a prominent figure in Cambodian history, serving as King from March third, nineteen fifty-five until his passing in nineteen sixty. He was the son of Prince Norodom Sutharot and the father of King Norodom Sihanouk, as well as the grandfather of the current king, Norodom Sihamoni.
Suramarit's royal lineage was marked by significant transitions. Following the death of his grandfather, King Norodom, in nineteen oh four, his brother Sisowath ascended the throne. After Sisowath's death in nineteen twenty-seven, the crown passed to his son, Sisowath Monivong, who was Suramarit's father-in-law.
In a notable union, Suramarit married Sisowath Kossamak, the daughter of Sisowath Monivong. Upon Monivong's death in nineteen forty-one, Suramarit's son, Sihanouk, was chosen as the new king. In a historic turn of events, Sihanouk abdicated the throne in favor of his father in nineteen fifty-five, leading to Suramarit's formal coronation on March fifth, nineteen fifty-six, just a day before his sixtieth birthday.
Following Suramarit's death in nineteen sixty, Sihanouk took on the role of Chief of State, while his wife, Sisowath Kossamak, became Queen. In recognition of his contributions, Suramarit was posthumously honored with the title Preah Karuna Preah Norodom Suramarit Preah Moha Kachanakkot.
