Nuruddin Farah

Nuruddin Farah, born on 24 November 1945, is a distinguished Somali novelist whose literary contributions have significantly shaped modern East African literature. His debut novel, From a Crooked Rib, published in 1970, is often hailed as a cornerstone of the genre, showcasing his profound narrative style and thematic depth.

Throughout his career, Farah has expanded his repertoire beyond novels to include plays for both stage and radio, as well as short stories and essays. His experiences living in various countries, including the United States, Britain, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Sudan, India, Uganda, Nigeria, and South Africa, have enriched his writing and provided diverse cultural perspectives.

Farah's literary prowess has earned him international acclaim, positioning him among the greatest contemporary writers. His accolades include the Premio Cavour in Italy, the Kurt Tucholsky Prize in Germany, and the Lettre Ulysses Award in Berlin. Notably, in 1998, he received the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, and the French edition of his 1993 novel Gifts won the St Malo Literature Festival's prize.
