Obadele Thompson

Obadele Thompson, born on March 30, 1976, in Barbados, is a distinguished former sprinter, lawyer, author, and speaker. He made history by winning Barbados's first and only Olympic medal as an independent nation, securing a bronze in the 100 metres at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. A three-time Olympian, Thompson competed in the 1996, 2000, and 2004 Games, reaching the finals in each event. His remarkable personal bests include a Barbadian record of nine point eighty-seven seconds for the 100 m, nineteen point ninety-seven seconds for the 200 m, and forty-five point thirty-eight seconds for the 400 m. Notably, he held the indoor 55 metres world record of five point ninety-nine seconds since 1997.

Thompson's athletic prowess was honed during his collegiate years at the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP), where he garnered numerous accolades for his achievements in academics, athletics, and leadership. He claimed four individual NCAA sprint titles and set two NCAA records, including the indoor 55 m and indoor 200 m. His collegiate career was marked by eleven NCAA All-American honors and sixteen Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships, alongside multiple Athlete of the Year awards.

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Thompson excelled academically, becoming a three-time USTFCCCA Academic All-American and a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. His achievements earned him recognition as a College Sports Information Directors of America First-Team At-Large Academic All-American and the State of Texas Certificate of Merit. After retiring from professional athletics, he authored his first book, 'Secrets of a Student-Athlete: A Reality Check,' and has served as a keynote speaker and panellist on various topics related to sports management and performance.

Thompson's contributions to athletics have been recognized through his induction into the UTEP Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2007 and the UTEP Athletics and Drake Relays Halls of Fame in 2011. He graduated summa cum laude in economics and marketing from UTEP and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law, where he now practices international arbitration and litigation.
