Oda Nobunaga

Oda Nobunaga, born on June twenty-third, fifteen thirty-four, was a prominent Japanese samurai and daimyō who played a pivotal role during the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. Known as the Tenka-bito, or 'person under heaven,' he is celebrated as the first 'Great Unifier' of Japan. His formidable reputation earned him the monikers 'Demon Daimyō' and 'Demon King of the Sixth Heaven.'

As the head of the powerful Oda clan, Nobunaga initiated a series of military campaigns beginning in the 1560s, which allowed him to consolidate power and emerge as the most dominant daimyō of his time. His reign marked the beginning of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, named after his castle in Azuchi, Shiga, and the subsequent residence of his retainer, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in Momoyama.

Nobunaga's military innovations and reforms in civil governance significantly shaped Japan's trajectory. He successfully overthrew the nominal shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki in fifteen seventy-three, effectively dissolving the Ashikaga Shogunate. By fifteen eighty, he had conquered most of Honshu and defeated the Ikkō-ikki, showcasing his strategic prowess.

Despite his achievements, Nobunaga's rule was marked by a ruthless approach to those who resisted his authority. His life came to a tragic end during the Honnō-ji Incident in fifteen eighty-two, when he was ambushed by his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide. Following his death, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu continued his legacy, completing the unification of Japan.
