Oh Eun-sun, born on March 1, 1966, is a renowned South Korean explorer and mountaineer, celebrated for her remarkable achievements in the world of high-altitude climbing.
She made history as the first South Korean woman to conquer the Seven Summits, a prestigious challenge that involves climbing the highest peak on each of the seven continents. Her most notable ascent occurred on April 27, 2010, when she reached the summit of Annapurna, a feat that she claimed marked her completion of all fourteen eight-thousanders.
However, her assertion of having summited Kangchenjunga was met with skepticism from experts in the field. Oh later acknowledged that she had turned back just a few hundred meters from the summit, leading the Korean Alpine Federation to determine that she had not officially reached the peak.
As a result, the mountaineering community recognizes Edurne Pasaban, a Basque climber, as the first woman to successfully scale all fourteen of the world's highest mountains. Despite the controversies surrounding her claims, Oh Eun-sun remains a significant figure in mountaineering, inspiring many with her adventurous spirit and determination.
