Ohthere of Hålogaland

Ohthere of Hålogaland, a notable figure from the Viking Age, is remembered primarily for his remarkable account of exploration, which he shared with King Alfred of Wessex around the year eight hundred ninety. His narrative, preserved in an Old English adaptation of a Latin historical text by Paulus Orosius, provides a rare glimpse into the life and travels of a seafarer from northern Norway.

Originating from Hålogaland, Ohthere claimed to reside at the northernmost point of Norway, where he believed no one else lived further north. His journeys took him to the White Sea in the north and to Denmark in the south, where he meticulously detailed his encounters with various peoples, including the Sami and the Beormas, who inhabited the regions he explored.

Ohthere's travels are significant not only for their geographical insights but also for their linguistic contributions. His account is the earliest known written reference to the term 'Denmark' and possibly the term 'Norway.' His home is thought to be near Tromsø, in southern Troms county, where he was also engaged in the fur trade, a vital economic activity of his time.
