Olavo Bilac

Olavo Brás Martins dos Guimarães Bilac, born on December sixteenth, eighteen sixty-five, was a distinguished Brazilian poet, journalist, and translator. He is best remembered as a leading figure in the Parnassian movement, alongside notable contemporaries Alberto de Oliveira and Raimundo Correia, forming what is known as the 'Parnassian Triad'. His literary prowess earned him the title of the 'Prince of Brazilian Poets' in nineteen oh seven, a recognition bestowed by the magazine Fon-Fon.

Bilac's contributions to Brazilian literature extend beyond poetry; he is also credited with writing the lyrics to the Brazilian Flag Anthem, a piece that resonates with national pride. His influence in the literary community was further solidified when he founded and occupied the fifteenth chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters in eighteen ninety-seven, a position he held until his passing in nineteen eighteen.

In addition to his literary achievements, Bilac was a passionate advocate for military service in Brazil, championing the cause of conscription. His efforts in this area have led to his recognition as the patron of the military service, highlighting his commitment to the nation beyond the realm of poetry.
