Oleg the Wise

Oleg the Wise, a prominent Varangian prince of the Rus', was born in the year eight hundred forty-five. He is best known for his pivotal role as the prince of Kiev, where he laid the foundational stones of what would become the Kievan Rus' state. His reign marked a significant expansion of territory, as he successfully subdued numerous East Slavic tribes, extending his influence from Novgorod southward along the Dnieper River.

According to the Primary Chronicle, Oleg succeeded his kinsman Rurik as the ruler of Novgorod. His leadership was characterized by military prowess, most notably demonstrated through a successful campaign against Constantinople, which solidified his reputation as a formidable leader.

Oleg's death in the year nine hundred twelve led to the succession of Rurik's son, Igor. However, the historical narrative surrounding Oleg's life and his relationship with the Rurikid dynasty remains a topic of debate among historians, particularly regarding the nature of his connection with Igor of Kiev.
