Olga Yegorova

Olga Yegorova, born on March 28, 1972, is a distinguished Russian distance runner known for her prowess in both long-distance and middle-distance events. Her athletic journey began with her first international appearance at the 1990 World Junior Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, where she showcased her talent by finishing ninth in the 1500 meters, a race won by the future world record holder Qu Yunxia.

Yegorova's career reached new heights when she competed in the 5000 meters at the 2000 Summer Olympics, where she earned the title of double world champion in this event. However, she later shifted her focus to shorter races, primarily the 1500 meters. This transition saw her finishing eleventh at the 2004 Summer Olympics and securing a second-place finish at the 2005 World Championships.

In 2001, Yegorova made headlines by sharing a jackpot of one million dollars from the IAAF Golden League. However, her career faced significant challenges when she tested positive for EPO that same year, leading to controversy as she was allowed to compete in the World Athletics Championships despite the positive test. The absence of a blood test by French authorities allowed her to evade suspension on a technicality.

Yegorova's career was further marred by doping allegations, as she was one of seven Russian athletes suspended for doping offences ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. On October 20, 2008, it was announced that she would receive a two-year ban for manipulating drug samples, marking a tumultuous chapter in her athletic legacy.
