Omar Abdullah, born on March 10, 1970, is a prominent Indian politician who has made significant contributions to the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. He currently serves as the chief minister of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, a position he assumed in October 2024. Abdullah's political journey began in 1998 when he was elected as the youngest member of the Lok Sabha, representing the Srinagar constituency.
His political career includes notable roles such as the union Minister of State for External Affairs in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's NDA government from July 2001 to December 2002. After resigning from the NDA government to focus on party activities, he played a crucial role in state politics, leading the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference as its vice president since 2009 and previously as its president.
Omar Abdullah became the youngest and the 11th chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on January 5, 2009, after forming a coalition government with the Indian National Congress. He held this position until 2015, when he was defeated in the 2014 state elections. Following the dissolution of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in 2018, he became the last leader of the opposition in the erstwhile assembly.
After a period of detention in 2020, Abdullah returned to the political arena in the 2024 Indian general election, where he faced defeat. However, he was later elected as an MLA in the 2024 union territory elections, marking a significant comeback as he took office as the first chief minister of the newly formed union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
