Omar Torrijos

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Omar Torrijos

Omar Torrijos, born on February thirteenth, nineteen twenty-nine, was a prominent figure in Panamanian history, serving as a military officer and politician. He rose to power through a coup d'état in nineteen sixty-eight, becoming the Commander of the Panamanian National Guard and assuming the self-styled title of 'Maximum Leader of the Panamanian Revolution'. Despite never holding the official title of president, Torrijos wielded significant influence over the country's political landscape.

During his leadership, Torrijos implemented a series of social reforms aimed at improving the lives of Panamanians. His most notable achievement came in the form of the Torrijos–Carter Treaties, negotiated in nineteen seventy-seven. These treaties were pivotal in securing Panama's full sovereignty over the Panama Canal, a strategic waterway that had been under U.S. control since nineteen oh three.

The treaties stipulated that Panama would regain control of the canal by the end of nineteen ninety-nine, marking a significant shift in the balance of power in the region. On December thirty-first, nineteen ninety-nine, the United States officially relinquished control, fulfilling the terms of the agreement and ending nearly a century of American oversight.

Omar Torrijos's legacy continued through his family, with his son, Martín Torrijos, serving as president from two thousand four to two thousand nine. Torrijos's impact on Panama remains a subject of discussion, as he is remembered for his revolutionary spirit and commitment to national sovereignty.
