Ona Munson, born on June sixteenth, nineteen oh three, was a versatile American actress whose career spanned over three decades, encompassing film, stage, and television. Raised in Portland, Oregon, she began her artistic journey in local theatrical productions before making her Broadway debut in nineteen nineteen with George White's Scandals. Throughout the 1920s, she starred in several Broadway plays and musicals, establishing herself as a prominent figure in New York theater.

In nineteen thirty, Munson transitioned to Los Angeles to pursue a film career. She appeared in notable films such as Going Wild and The Hot Heiress, but her heart remained with the stage, leading her to return to Broadway for productions like Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts in nineteen thirty-five. Her film career resumed in the late 1930s, culminating in her iconic role as madam Belle Watling in the classic Gone with the Wind, released in nineteen thirty-nine.

Despite her success, Munson often faced typecasting, particularly in the 1940s, where her performances were overshadowed by her role in Gone with the Wind. She married painter Eugene Berman in nineteen fifty, following a previous marriage to director Edward Buzzell. Munson's personal life was marked by her relationships with women, including notable figures like Alla Nazimova and Mercedes de Acosta, leading some to describe her marriages as 'lavender marriages' that concealed her bisexuality.

By the mid-1950s, Munson's health began to decline due to complications from an unspecified surgical procedure, compounded by her use of barbiturates. Tragically, in February nineteen fifty-five, her husband discovered her lifeless body in their Manhattan apartment, having succumbed to a barbiturate overdose in a heartbreaking end to her tumultuous life.
