Ondřej Synek, born on October thirteenth, nineteen eighty-two, is a distinguished Czech former rower renowned for his exceptional achievements in the sport of rowing. He is celebrated as a five-time World Champion in Single Sculls, clinching titles in two thousand ten, two thousand thirteen, two thousand fourteen, two thousand fifteen, and two thousand seventeen. His prowess on the water has made him a formidable competitor, particularly in the single sculls category.
Throughout his career, Synek has also made a significant mark on the Olympic stage, earning silver medals at the two thousand eight Summer Olympics in Beijing and the two thousand twelve Summer Olympics in London. In Beijing, he faced off against Mahé Drysdale, who was hindered by illness, yet Synek was ultimately bested by defending Olympic Champion Olaf Tufte, despite having consistently outperformed him in the years leading up to the event.
In London, Synek entered the competition as a co-favorite for gold alongside Drysdale, following a series of gold and silver exchanges at previous World Championships. However, he fell short once again, finishing behind Drysdale. His quest for Olympic gold continued into the two thousand sixteen Rio Olympics, where he was the clear favorite after winning three consecutive World Championships. Unfortunately, he secured a bronze medal, finishing behind both Drysdale and the unexpected Damir Martin.
With a remarkable total of thirteen World and Olympic single scull medals, Synek stands as the most successful single sculler in history to have never won an Olympic Gold. Following his Rio defeat, he expressed a desire to make one final attempt for the elusive Olympic gold at the Tokyo two thousand twenty games. However, in June twenty twenty-one, he announced via Facebook that he would not be participating in Tokyo. By September twenty twenty-one, Synek confirmed his retirement from competitive rowing.
