Onfim

Onfim was a young schoolchild who lived in the vibrant city of Novgorod during the 13th century, a time rich in cultural and educational development. Born around the year 1250, he was likely just six or seven years old when he began to explore the world of letters and learning.

His unique contributions to history are found in the form of notes and homework exercises that he meticulously scratched into soft birch bark. These artifacts, preserved in the clay soil of Novgorod, offer a rare glimpse into the educational practices of the time and the mind of a curious child.

Onfim's writings were composed in the Old Novgorod dialect, a historical variant of Russian, showcasing his early engagement with language. In addition to letters and syllables, he expressed his creativity through drawings, depicting battle scenes and images of himself alongside his teacher, reflecting both his imagination and the influences of his environment.
