Ong Teng Cheong

Ong Teng Cheong, a distinguished Singaporean architect and politician, was born on January twenty-second, nineteen thirty-six, during a time when Singapore was part of the Straits Settlements. He pursued his education in architecture at the University of Adelaide and later earned a master's degree in urban planning from the University of Liverpool through a Colombo Plan scholarship.

In nineteen sixty-seven, Ong began his career as a town planner with the Ministry of National Development. After four years, he ventured into entrepreneurship by establishing his own architectural firm, Ong & Ong Architects & Town Planners, alongside his wife, Ling Siew May, who shared his passion for architecture.

Ong's political journey commenced in the early nineteen seventies when he joined the People's Action Party. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Kim Keat Constituency in the nineteen seventy-two general election, serving until nineteen ninety-one. He continued to represent the Kim Keat division of the Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency until nineteen ninety-three, while also holding significant roles such as PAP Chairman and various ministerial positions, including Minister for Communications and Deputy Prime Minister.

On August sixteenth, nineteen ninety-three, Ong resigned from the PAP and Parliament to run for the presidency, winning fifty-eight point seven percent of the vote. He became known as the
