Orvar Bergmark

Orvar Bergmark, born on November sixteenth, nineteen thirty, was a distinguished Swedish football defender, manager, and bandy player. He made his mark as the second manager of the Sweden national football team, leading them to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Mexico nineteen seventy. This achievement was particularly significant as it marked Sweden's return to the World Cup after a twelve-year hiatus, the last being in nineteen fifty-eight when Sweden hosted the tournament.

During his playing career, Bergmark represented Sweden in the nineteen fifty-eight World Cup, where he earned a silver medal and was named to the All-Star team. He also participated in the Olympic Bandy tournament in nineteen fifty-two and played for Örebro SK, contributing to the sport's growth in Sweden. His dual talent in both football and bandy showcased his versatility as an athlete.

In the nineteen seventy World Cup, Sweden faced tough competition, including a narrow loss to Italy and a disappointing draw against Israel. Despite the challenges, Bergmark's squad featured notable players such as Ove Grahn and Hasse Selander. However, the tournament was marred by a goalkeeping dilemma, leading to a change in strategy as Bergmark sought to secure a better performance.

After the World Cup, Bergmark stepped down from his managerial role, paving the way for Georg 'Åby' Ericson. Sadly, Bergmark battled Parkinson's disease from around nineteen eighty until his passing in two thousand four, leaving behind a rich legacy in both football and bandy.
