Oscar Torp, born on June eighth, nineteen ninety-three, was a prominent figure in Norwegian politics, representing the Norwegian Labour Party. His leadership spanned from nineteen twenty-three to nineteen forty-five, during which he also served as the mayor of Oslo in nineteen thirty-five and nineteen thirty-six.
In nineteen thirty-five, Torp took on the role of acting minister of defence under the government of Johan Nygaardsvold. His political career saw him transition to minister of social affairs from nineteen thirty-six to nineteen thirty-nine, followed by a tenure as minister of finance from nineteen thirty-nine to nineteen forty-two. He returned to the position of minister of defence in nineteen forty-two within the London-based Norwegian exile government, continuing until the elections of nineteen forty-five.
Hailing from Skjeberg, Torp was first elected to the Parliament of Norway representing Oslo in nineteen thirty-six, although he did not take his seat until nineteen forty-eight. He subsequently became the faction leader for the Labour Party in Parliament. In nineteen fifty-one, he ascended to the role of prime minister of Norway after Einar Gerhardsen stepped down, but this was reversed in nineteen fifty-five when he became the president of the Storting, a position he held until his death.
