Oskar Gröning

Oskar Gröning, born on June 10, 1921, was a German SS Unterscharführer who served at the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp. His duties involved the meticulous counting and sorting of money confiscated from prisoners, as well as managing their personal belongings upon arrival. Throughout his time at Auschwitz, he witnessed the harrowing procedures of mass killings, experiences that would haunt him for the rest of his life.

After being transferred from Auschwitz to a combat unit in October 1944, Gröning surrendered to British forces at the war's end. Initially, his role within the SS went unnoticed, and he was sent to the UK as a prisoner of war, where he worked as a farm laborer. Upon returning to Germany, he led a seemingly ordinary life, often avoiding discussions about his past at Auschwitz.

However, more than four decades later, the rise of Holocaust denial compelled Gröning to speak out about his experiences. He became a vocal critic of those who denied the atrocities he had witnessed, openly acknowledging his complicity in the horrific events and even confessing to stealing jewelry and money from victims of the gas chambers for personal gain.

In September 2014, German prosecutors charged Gröning as an accessory to murder in three hundred thousand cases due to his actions at Auschwitz. His trial commenced in April 2015, with the court deeming him fit to stand trial at the age of ninety-three. The proceedings took place in Lüneburg, Germany, and on July 15, 2015, he was found guilty of knowingly facilitating mass murder, receiving a four-year prison sentence. Despite several unsuccessful appeals, Gröning passed away on March 9, 2018, while hospitalized before beginning his sentence.
