Otto Herschmann

Dr. Otto Herschmann, born on January 4, 1877, was a remarkable Austrian Jewish athlete whose talents spanned multiple disciplines, including swimming and fencing. His athletic prowess was evident early on, as he made history by winning a silver medal in swimming at the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896. This achievement marked him as one of the few athletes to excel in more than one sport.

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Herschmann was a distinguished lawyer and held significant positions within the sports community. He served as the president of both the Austrian Olympic Committee and the Austrian Swimming Federation, contributing to the development and promotion of sports in Austria.
