Otto Wels

Otto Wels, born on September fifteenth, eighteen seventy-three, was a prominent German politician whose influence spanned over two decades. He served as a member of the Reichstag from nineteen twelve until nineteen thirty-three, and he held the esteemed position of chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) from nineteen nineteen until his passing in nineteen thirty-nine.

Wels played a crucial role during the tumultuous early days of the German Revolution of nineteen eighteen to nineteen nineteen, where he served as the military commander of Berlin. His leadership was further exemplified during the Kapp Putsch in nineteen twenty, where he was instrumental in organizing a general strike that successfully thwarted the anti-republican forces.

As the Weimar Republic faced increasing challenges, Wels recognized the limitations of his strategies, particularly during the mass unemployment crisis of the Great Depression. His poignant speech in the Reichstag in nineteen thirty-three, opposing Adolf Hitler and the Enabling Act, marked a significant moment in German history, signaling the end of the Weimar Republic.

Following the passage of the Enabling Act, which granted Hitler dictatorial powers, Wels fled Germany and established the SPD's exile organization, Sopade. He spent his final years in Paris, where he passed away in nineteen thirty-nine, just two weeks after the onset of World War II.
