Ottokar II of Bohemia

Ottokar II of Bohemia, known as the Iron and Golden King, was born around the year one thousand two hundred thirty-three in Městec Králové, Bohemia. A prominent member of the Přemyslid dynasty, he ascended to the throne as King of Bohemia in one thousand two hundred fifty-three, reigning until his death in one thousand two hundred seventy-eight. His rule marked the zenith of the Přemyslid power within the Holy Roman Empire, although his aspirations for the imperial crown remained unfulfilled.

As the second son of King Wenceslaus I, who ruled from one thousand two hundred thirty to one thousand two hundred fifty-three, Ottokar was initially groomed for a role as an ecclesiastical administrator. His elder brother, Vladislaus, was the designated heir to the Bohemian kingdom. Through his mother, Kunigunde, he was connected to the Hohenstaufen dynasty, which had significant influence in the Holy Roman Empire until its male line became extinct following the execution of King Conradin of Sicily in one thousand two hundred sixty-eight.

Ottokar's titles extended beyond that of King of Bohemia; he was also the Margrave of Moravia from one thousand two hundred forty-seven, Duke of Austria from one thousand two hundred fifty-one, and Duke of Styria from one thousand two hundred sixty. Additionally, he held the titles of Duke of Carinthia and Landgrave of Carniola from one thousand two hundred sixty-nine. His reign was characterized by ambitious territorial expansion and consolidation of power, which ultimately defined his legacy.
